AWAKENING APRIL – Jane Fitzgerald

This poem is based on the film, ENCHANTED APRIL, released in 1991, adapted from Elizabeth von Arnim’s 1922 novel, THE ENCHANTED APRIL.

It was a damp, gray day in London
There had been a succession of
Depressing,  lifeless weeks
A small notice in the newspaper
Caught the attention of a lonely woman
The advertisement offered an appealing escape
” For those who love wisteria and sunshine
a small medieval castle in Italy
perched above the brilliant sea
Is available for the month of April “
Four diverse women pursued this rare adventure
They all craved change and warmth
The castle was beyond their imagination
It exuded an aesthetic lovely charm
It was as if a gifted artist had brushed
a flowered, light, serene retreat
Encircled by sunlit vistas of water
The enchanting dreamlike setting
awoke the dormant spirit of life within
Just like the blooming earth in spring
The Londoners were captivated
by nature’s sweet song
Birds, shimmering seas, expanses of flowers,
all whitewashed with wisteria, lilies, roses,
and the sweet smell of acacias
Harbingers of a freshly cleaned world
Caused their minds to slip sideways
Opening doors to the beauty of the inner self
Visions altered by a willingness to risk softness
Inspired by the season and scene
Love flooded the previous barren souls
Each woman discovered contentment and  joy
It was April, a time of rebirth
A time for hearts to come alive
To revel in being part of a sensual world
The ancient castle  had once again
Bestowed its seductive magic
