BEHIND THE BARS ~ Yuting Zhao

This is my high school.

Behind the iron bars is the factory that holds the examination machines in the forms of teenagers. 36 units are densely arranged in the four-storey building, and in each unit, 40 machines are displayed in a neat 5×8 rectangle. Some units are supposed to have more experienced and ingenious workers, so many manufacturers talk with the supervisors to put their own machines in these units rather than those run by the clumsy workers. Therefore, sometimes more than 50 machines are congested in one prestigious unit, and the workers there are paid more salary.

These machines are multi-functional. Other than taking examinations, they also do cleaning jobs for the whole factory, and transmit raw materials (papers and exercise books). Some high-functioning ones are chosen to serve the workers when they need tools or refreshment.

A worker operates all the machines in a whole unit at the same time. Since this can be an intense job, they take turns to work for 45 minutes then go back to their offices to do less intense jobs. Because of their workload and pressure, they usually punch on the iron surface of the machine when they are in a mood. Though some manufacturers are worried when they see the uneven surfaces, most of them see no harm in it.

The machines, after spinning at a high speed for 45 minutes, can sometimes be fumy. They are left to stand for 10 minutes between each operation, but many of them are programmed to be auto-starting, which means the minute they are turned off, they will start themselves again whether they are fuming or not. Machines are charged two times a day, 10 minutes each time. If some takes longer to charge, it is supposed to be mal-functioning and needs fixing by the foreman of each unit.

Sometimes the workers hear music coming out from some machines during breaktime. It is contagious so the workers must take action immediately to prevent the virus from spreading to the whole building. Usually, a few scolding words can effectively stop the music. After all, most of these voice-controlled machines are very intelligent.
